NYC Snow Biking in a Blizzard

Moonlander BionX Snow

The Moonlander has always been one of my favorite bikes. The massive tires, the ultra-lightweight frame, the cushy ride. I even wrote a review about how much I loved the Moonlander with BionX in October. I fell in love with this bike before I had the opportunity to really test the Moonlander – like a blizzard in NYC.

Check out my video review of the Moonlander with BionX to see how this bike held up.

The Stromer ST1 – The First Ride

By: Mike from DIYBIKING.COM

Stromer ST1 Electric Bike

If you live in a four story walk-up in Greenwich Village do not - I repeat - do not buy a Stromer ST1 under any circumstances.

I’m just throwing that out there.

Here’s the thing: I’ve already ridden and reviewed the electric assist Brompton and Dahon Formula, and these are electric assist folding bikes that brag about their weight and portability. The Stromer ST1 doesn’t fold and, at 62 pounds, is around twenty pounds heavier than either of those aforementioned NYCeWheels bikes.

The fact that it doesn’t fold was an issue out of the gate, because I couldn’t bring it with me on the train if I returned from Manhattan during Metro North peak hours. So I brought it home early one weekday afternoon and was not only able to bring it on the train easily, but I was able to see one of the new and seldom seen Metro North bike racks.

Stromer ST1 Electric Bike

I you eat your Wheaties, you’ll be able to bring the bike up and hook it on the rack. When I did this, I heard no creak and because it is still the relative size of a normal bike it did fit.

While sitting next to it on the train ride back, I got to look at the bike in such a way I was able to understand where all of the weight was coming from. The 500W motor in the rear hub. The 36 volt lithium ion battery stowed in the bottom tube. The rear rack and fenders - all of it gives the bike heft.

Still more weight comes from the unusual and optional seatpost A Cane Creek Thudbuster. I’ve been familiar with these for a while and would write a song about them if I could. Any bike with a hardball aluminum frame (like the Stromer ST1) needs one of these. It just makes a more comfortable ride.

So yes, this is a heavy bike. That can’t be sugarcoated. But then again, you get something for all of this heft. To find out what it is, you have to turn the bike on, select the ‘Power’ mode, and begin pedaling.

Stromer ST1 Electric Bicycle

With the fat Big Ben tires and the solid frame, the bike doesn’t feel like anything other than an electric assist battering ram when riding. Pedaling at a pace that feels like ten miles an hour while the spedometer says you’re going double that is a grin-inducer, to be sure. Not only that, but the bike has regenerative braking that puts power back into the battery when you slow down - which is not a common feature.

I’m going to have to put this bike through some paces - including, but not limited, to a hilly, 20+ mile ride. I’ll let you know how that goes shortly.

Winter is Coming (Prepare to batten down the bike battery)

my-electric-brompton-s-first-boat-tripA few months ago an older gentleman named Steven came to us, looking for an electric bike to help him up the steeper hills, down the longer stretches, and keep pace with his wife who, according to Steven, "rides at a she-woman pace."

Steven ended up purchasing the electric brompton bike, one of our best folding bikes, fit with a powerful electric motor, and since has kept in touch, writing a great electric bike review of his bike for us, posting on our facebook with pics of his bike, and providing a steady stream of clever and beautifully written anecdotes about his bike and his many adventures.

Most recently, Steven shared a post of his on FB, all about preparing his electric brompton bike for the impending winter season:

"Winter is Coming (Prepare to batten down the bike battery)

Brompton in the snowThis morning driving to work I turned on the seat heaters for the first time after last winter. Oh Oh...the good times are coming to a close.

This is Rochester, NY. In traffic my mind will ramble and I was thinking that with early dark and colder weather, my Brompton E-bike will soon be sleeping with the bears until spring. Sure, I see folks on bikes in mid-January on ice-coated streets, but I suspect that most buyers of electric bikes do not fall into that living-on-the-edge, gotta-be-nuts category. I sure don't.

Which led me to muse about that expensive battery and how to store it for the winter. I got to work and Googled Li-ion battery care (my "boss" is my wife and I can get away with that performance-review killing behavior, I'm underpaid, anyway).

Bottom line: the battery needs to be stored away from cold or heat; under moderate temperatures in the 40-65 F range. Freezing temps and high heat is good for battery sales but bad for you.

More interesting, do NOT store the battery fully charged. It puts excess stress on the cells. Ideally the battery should be charged at 40 to 50% of full charge. How to determine that I haven't a clue, but that is the guideline. Recharge the battery a bit every month or so to make up for normal discharge. There is a lot of information online but it is clear that a bike battery cannot just be left in a corner of a cold garage.

my-electric-brompton-s-first-boat-trip-1Thanks again Steven for the great post, and for making a few good points that everyone should keep in mind while preparing for the winter.  If you plan on being beset with snow and think you won't be riding your e-bike for awhile it is important, as Steven mentions, not to let your battery sit unattended for a long period of time.  We've definitely gotten some calls from those who left it until to late and ended up with a battery that was so low it couldn't recognize a charge.

Steven also makes a good point that it's better not to store a Lithium ion battery at completely full charge, as it will put a strain on the cells to maintain that energy.  To estimate the charge of a battery, it's easiest to use a console that can measure remaining charge.  The electric Brompton comes with such a console, which indicates when the battery is at %100, %75, %50, and %25.  This isn't an exact estimate (Steven is currently in the process of finding more exact methods of determining battery charge) but it will be close enough to determine a safe storage level.

Always a pleasure Steven!  Looking forward to hearing about your next adventures on the Electric Brompton Bike!

Jack

Dahon Jetstream with BionX makes for the perfect adventuring bike

The Dahon Jetstream P8 is a highly popular bike in our shop, probably because it can do things very few other 20" folding bikes can. An adjustable dual suspension system, Kevlar-lined tires, and a rack-ready frame means that this is a bike that can take on any kind of terrain. It's a bike made for adventure.

One of our Jetstream customers went the extra mile, mounting a cargo rack and a BionX electric conversion system to his ride, and proceeded to put it through its paces in some really wild places. He was so happy with the results that he sent us some beautiful pictures, along with the following review. If you are as impressed as Joseph was, visit the NYCeWheels website to learn more about the Dahon Jetstream folding bike, and about our BionX conversion kits.

Enjoy!

Jetstream BionX conversion: "Perfect in every way"

Just wanted to let you all know how pleased I am with my Jetstream Bionx coversion with
the rear rack.  It's perfect in every way.  I took it out for a 23 mile spin around the circumference of Rancho Palos Verdes Peninsula yesterday... there are a lot of hill climbs and descents on this route (not to mention stunning vistas over the pacific, it's a very popular cyclist destination).  This was a former evening routine route for me and doing it on my new bike was a whole new experience, zipping up all the climbs was other worldly fun... I was surprised as well at the efficiency of the re-gen, I didn't expect it to do much but I used in on every extended descent and after a 23mile ride my battery was only half used and I'd had it in the 300% mode on everything except the steep descents.

The full suspension is just great and the bike handles more comfortably than I was expecting.  The incentives of this package are unheralded... full suspension, electric assist, cargo capable and folds into the size of a suitcase.  I can't think of why anyone would want anything else!  I love it.
I would rank my experience at 99% satisfied.

The 1% issue is the seat... because of the way the saddle mount is designed I can't trade out alternate saddles.  I  need something with more area and cushioning than the saddle that comes with the bike but don't know what to do because of the style of the mount... are there options available for me (besides padded shorts)... how can I configure a new saddle given the unique seat mount on the post?

Thanks!
Joseph

Update:
I found a product for my seat problem that seems to be the perfect solution here.

E-Brompton Banter—Part 7—Helping My Communit-E

How can a simple and fun folding E-bike help my community, you might ask. The answer is ’in more ways than is easily imagined‘. The benefits it gives an individual are many. Health, happiness and economical ease are some of the ways. The freedom and joy of a bike ride can be big factors in a person’s life.

Go green and get healthy with E-bikes

The ways it helps those around you and your community are also very big. We all hate air pollution. Equally, we don’t care much for noise pollution either. You won’t see or hear an electric-assist Brompton adding either of these things to the world around you. The world loves quiet and the E-Brompton love the world.  Any bike helps to keep the gas-burners off the road and out of the way of our serenity. The Brompton with an electric-assist conversion does it so much better. Of course the folding aspect of the Brompton is very handy for many reasons, but add in the power to help you up the grades and your peace of mind while cycling goes sky-high. A contented person does wonders for any community.

Turbo Bob's E-brompton

Turbo Bob's E-brompton

The health benefits of cycling are well known. With an E-Brompton, you have the option of not pedaling, but you will find that when you are on a bike, pedaling just comes naturally. As with most E-bikes, the best way to ride is to let the motor do some of the work while you do the rest. Another great part of E-bikes is the way they can help people recovering from health issues get back on a bike and work their way back to full strength. Count on an electric-assist Brompton for that.

Some people who would otherwise never cycle because of lost strength for many reasons, can enjoy cycling with minimal concerns. Helping people do what they want, when they want to is a big reason that E-bikes continue to gain popularity world-wide. Adding electric power to a Brompton folding bike just makes sense in so many ways.

E-brompton goes to city hall

The reason I decided to do this post on helping the community with my Brompton has to do with a recent trip to city hall here in San Diego. A local bike advocacy group, Bike San Diego, put together a day where we would ask our local leaders to move towards making our town more bike friendly. I could have ridden downtown, but it is quite a way. So, I popped the E-Brompton in the back of my econo-wagon and drove about half way to the free parking area near the airport.
Electric Brompton BikeRiding to the meeting was a big part of the plan. And handing over that cash to the parking place might have helped our local economy, but I’d rather spread it around in ways that make more sense. Spending your money wisely helps your community too. It has been proven that a strong biking presence in a area promotes businesses. Riding an E-Brompton makes for a good local economy.
After the meeting there were friends and new friends that wanted to talk about the E-Brompton. And as always I let anyone interested take it for as long of a spin as they wanted. I have long since lost count of how many seats have sat in my saddle since NYCeWheels sent me this bike last year. There is much talk in every instance of how this bike would be so welcome in their lifestyle. E-Bromptons bring community members together.
This post on how E-Bromptons are good for communities is kind of a stretch, but not all that much. Bikes are good for us, E-bikes are good for us, so why not electric-assist folding bikes? If it is good for even one person, the whole area benefits.  I know the E-brompton has been great for me. It has been handy, rides great, makes me happy, and helps pull me up the hills when I need.   What more could you ask for in a bike?

Turbo Bob.

Are hybrid electric bikes the future of electric bicycles?

Hybrid electric bikes aren't dinosaurs!

Hybrid electric bikes aren't dinosaurs!

Electric bicycle technology has come a long way. The days of 100 lb moped style dinosaurs are thankfully far behind us. These early electric bikes hardly had the feel of a traditional bicycle and were impossible to pedal without motor assistance. Evolving battery and electric motor technologies have spurred a trend towards electric bicycles which are both lighter and have a longer range than ever before. This is made possible through a combination of human and motor power. With the traditional drawbacks of electric bikes fading into memory, this new species of electric bicycles emerges: the hybrid electric bike!

You may be wondering what exactly makes a hybrid electric bike different from any other electric bike? I mean, you could always pedal those older electric bicycles. Isn't that combining human power with the motor too? You're right, partially. The main difference is that older electric bikes were not sensitive to pedal force. The motor would put out the same amount of power regardless of how hard you pedaled. This usually amounted to the majority of power coming from the motor. As a result the motor tends to run most, if not all the time. This leads to rapid depletion of the battery and shorter range. So how do true hybrid electric bikes work their magic?

The key difference is the pedal torque sensor. All true electric hybrid bicycles have one. A torque sensor sits within the bottom bracket and reads the force put into the pedals by the rider. This information is then sent to a controller which proportionally adds motor assistance. That all sounds pretty complex, but in a nutshell it means the harder you pedal the more motor assistance you get. This smooth integration of human and electric power leads to some other great advantages an electric hybrid bicycle.

Because you are contributing a good amount of effort, a hybrid electric bicycle's motor doesn't have to work as hard all the time. This translates to a longer lasting charge in the battery and a greater overall range. The most advanced hybrid electric bikes can even recharge their own battery while you ride. This regenerative braking is achieved by using a motor brake to control speed while riding downhill and when coming to a stop. Although it is unrealistic to fully recharge the battery by this method it does increase range significantly. The advantages an electric hybrid bike are not purely limited to technology however. They are also by nature more enjoyable to ride.

The hybrid electric bike represents a movement in the industry to develop an electric bike which feels and handles like a regular bike. This means they are lighter, more agile, and able to be pedaled without motor assistance. Two camps withing the world of hybrid electric bikes approach this issue from different angles. Camp one uses hub motor add-on kits like the BionX which take the place of the rear wheel on any normal bike, effectively converting it to a electric hybrid bike. Camp two represents fully integrated hybrid electric bicycles, designed with the latest in battery technology and frame design to make them close to a regular bike as possible.

Hybrid electric bicycles represent the future of electric biking. By combining human and electric power this class of electric bikes can go farther than any other. Because they are much lighter and require the rider to contribute to powering the bike they feel and handle much like a regular bike. The age of super heavy throttle powered electric bikes is coming to a close. Have a look at some of the hybrid electric bikes ushering in a new era of ultra-efficient, fun to ride electric bicycles!

Electric bicycles, alternative to cars?

Second and third cars for a family are becoming obsolete with the skyrocketing costs of auto insurance and gasoline.  Many families are looking for alternatives to having a second or third car and electric bicycles are being viewed as a great alternative.

Electric bicycles offer you the ability to get to where you need to go quickly, safely and economically - a winning combination!  Electric bicycles are much more efficient and cost-effective as compared to cars and even motorcycles.

Electric super bikes as some would call them can either assist you with your trip by offering 50% of the legwork (power assist models) or can whisk you to wherever you need to go as you steer (power-on-demand models).  Electric bike kits can even turn an existing bike into an electric bicycle by adding a conversion kit for an electric bike.

Electric bicycles have improved in terms of technology to the point where they are far more economical than even the hybrid vehicles on the market.  The long-life of electric bicycles and the mere pennies it costs to recharge the battery make electric bicycles a far more economical choice for anyone commuting to work, school or anywhere else you need to go.

A commuter bicycle made in commuter heaven - electric bicycles are a great choice for people in small or large cities around the globe.  It is easy to travel into work on electric bicycles and you can even buy a folding electric bicycle so you can be assured to be able to take your bicycle into the office, gym, house or anywhere you want to store it rather than leaving it outside.

Electric bicycles are also safer for the environment than any car or hybrid vehicle.  Electric bicycles have become very popular with many families looking for alternatives to second or third vehicles.  In fact there are likely more electric bicycles on the road than you may realize.

Electric bicycles do not necessarily stick out any more than traditional bicycles.  With electric bike kits, for example, you can convert almost any bike into an electric bike.  But, before you rush out to order a conversion kit for an electric bike you want to make sure that your bike can be converted - there are some models that may not be able to be converted for one reason or another.

Most bike shops will let you know if your bike can become an electric bike or not and some will even do the conversion for you and test it so you know your electric bike kit was set up right.

Today's economy almost demands that people find alternative means of transportation other than buying 2nd or 3rd cars.  Electric bicycles have been seen as one of the safest and most economical alternatives to traditional cars and even hybrid cars.

Rather than spend thousands of dollars per year on insurance and skyrocketing gas prices you can get where you need to go by selecting on of the electric bicycles on the market.

Alternative to Mass Transportation

Mass transit is wonderful and horrible all at the same time.  Every major city and many smaller cities have elaborate mass transit systems.  Though some cities boast terrific mass transit systems they are still not the ultimate form of transportation.

Many commuters complain of long lines, over-crowded buses, trains and subway, as well as long waits for a bus, subway or train to come.  These same commuters feel compelled to use mass transit because they need an economic means of transportation that is quick enough to get through the traffic found in most cities.

Electric bikes are a great way to get around any city or metro-area.  Electric bikes can make mass transportation a thing of the past for you.

Whether you are looking for new forms of transportation that are faster, or because you want a safer means of transportation or a more economical one - electric bikes may be the answer to your prayers.

Anyone living in a major city knows that traffic is always a nightmare.  Subways usually provide the fasted transportation.  Smelly, steamy, over-crowded subway platforms are sometimes unsafe, unsanitary and unwelcome.  The option for many people is either take a car, cab or walk.

A car in a major city is usually more of a liability than an assistance.  Cab fares are expensive and walking is not always an option.  An electric powered bike is a great alternative that many people do not even realize exists.

Electric bikes are efficient and cost-effective making them a great means of transportation.  Rather than waiting for a bus or subway you can be on your way quickly and easily to wherever you need to go.

If you live in the suburbs you may consider electric mountain bikes - or perhaps that is your best option because the streets in your city are not all that you wish them to be.  Electric motor bikes are a great alternative to expensive, crowded trains and subways.

Electric bikes come in various types and styles and this website explains them all.  For those looking for an alternate to mass transit but are concerned with leaving their bicycle unattended to, folding electric bikes may be the perfect solution because you can take them in with you and easily store them virtually anywhere.

People in major cities around the world have been looking for ways to avoid mass transportation.  Some feel mass transportation is not convenient enough, others feel mass transportation is not safe enough, while others think mass transportation is not economical enough.

Electric bikes are a great way to solve any and all of these problems.  People across the world who live or work in major cities, or commute moderate distances to and from work or school have found that electric bikes offer greater flexibility, more dependability, safer and more economical transportation than mass transit systems.

Rather than complain about buses, subways and trains you can put all those problems behind you by buying a reliable electric bike.

"What if I only have a mile or two to travel, and I'm looking for something electric that is light-weight and portable, something that's smaller than a bike?" Then it sounds like you should think about choosing an electric scooter. An electric motorized scooter is no electric bike, but more than suitable for basic travel needs. "What if I don't even need it to be electric? I just want something very small and light!" Then it sounds like you're in the market for a kick scooter (check out the Xootr kick scooter, as seen in 'Little Manhattan.')

How to Fit Electric Bikes into Your Lifestyle

Do you have a lifestyle of always being on the go or do you have a passion for the outdoors? If you answered yes to either of these questions, owning an electric bike would bring you a feeling of contentment.

Advantages of Owning an Electric Bicycle

Electric powered bikes are a sure way to maneuver around a crowded area. Sitting in traffic jams can be eliminated by riding an electric bicycle because you will have access to routes that cars and motorcycles can not reach. You would also have extra spending money from the savings you will acquire on gasoline, car maintenance, and insurance.

Owning an electric bike enables you to run errands in a shorter period of time and less cost. An electric bike is ideal for the person who has no license. One great factor of the electric bike is that it reduces air pollution. The bikes are one of the most cost effective and convenient ways of transportation today.

Electric Motor Bike for Exercising

You are probably saying, How can I get exercise by riding an electric bicycle?

An electric powered bicycle enables the rider to pedal, but with little effort. The rider can climb hills more easily and travel a longer distance. Riding in the fresh air will make you feel invigorating and will strengthen your muscles without making them ache.

Electric Bicycles for Work

Using your electric bike for commuting back and forth to work will help to clear your mind and make you feel good all day. If you are riding your electric bike to work, you will not have to worry about the issue of sweating like you did on a regular bike. You will be going faster on the electric bike and this keeps the wind chill effect greater, thus keeping you cool. When the weather is hot, you can maintain a normal speed by letting the electric motor take over. In cold weather, you can turn the motor off.

Once you have arrived at work, you will have a few minutes to relax because of the time saved by not having to ride the bus or go through the hassle of searching for a parking space.

Electric Bikes are Great for Any Lifestyle

Remember, riding an electric bike gives you the freedom to wave at your neighbors, find a convenient parking place, and enjoy the special moments in life such as rain drops hitting your face or the wind blowing your hair. Choose an electric bike to suit your lifestyle and enjoy
